1. What size tool box fits a small truck?

Choosing the right tool box for a small or compact truck is all about maximizing storage without taking up too much bed space. Slim or low-profile crossover boxes are an ideal choice. They span the bed while leaving room underneath for longer items like ladders or lumber, and Slim Line versions are perfect for tighter beds.

Utility chests mount against the cab wall and don’t interfere with bed rails, making them a great option for short beds, with widths generally between 30" and 50" and a lower profile suited for compact trucks. Side boxes run along the bed rails, usually 12"–18" deep, offering convenient, within-arm’s-reach storage without taking up floor space.

Before purchasing, always measure your truck bed and account for any accessories such as tonneau covers, ladder racks, or headache racks, which can affect fit. For most small trucks, a Slim Line crossover or compact side box provides the best balance of storage capacity, accessibility, and bed clearance.

2. What is the best tool box for a small pickup truck?

4. Can I use a crossover tool box with a tonneau cover? 

Unfortunately, crossover tool boxes will not work with a tonneau cover. The issue? Clearance. A crossover tool box mounts across the bed rails, and many tonneau covers (especially roll-up and hinged styles) need that same rail space. We do, however, sell under tonneau chest boxes that are compatible with tonneau covers.
